Escadinhas Building

Escadinhas do Marquês de Ponte de Lima

Lisbon, Portugal

2017 – …

How to turn static into dynamic?

The house is located in the middle of Marquês de Ponte de Lima Stairs, in the very centre of the historical neighbourhood of Mouraria.

In the front, a street hidden by some recently refurbished buildings and others still in a quite bad shape.

In the back, the house opens to an incredible panoramic view of the adjacent historic neighbourhoods, spreading out towards all the urban landscape miles away.

The highlight of the project is the space organization in its interior. The circulation has been reduced to privilege the social area of the house.

The living room with the kitchen crosses the entire plan, from one façade to the other, creating a direct connection to the bedrooms and bathrooms.

The door has been embedded within a painted wooden panel, transforming into a ‘secret door’.

The house is located in the middle of Marquês de Ponte de Lima Stairs, in the very centre of the historical neighbourhood of Mouraria.

In this place, the experience of the main façade and the back of the house are quite divergent.

In the front, a street hidden by some recently refurbished buildings and others still in a quite bad shape. In the back, the house opens to an incredible panoramic view of the adjacent historic neighbourhoods, spreading out towards all the urban landscape miles away.

This modest construction with the site area of 80 m2, three floors and an attic, was found in an advanced

state of degradation – making it impossible to maintain it without complete demolition of its interior.

The project is trying to maintain the original typology. The main entrance connects to a side staircase, giving access to the apartments, one per floor, totalling three.

When it comes to the interior organization of the space, the idea was to give privilege to the social area of the apartment and reduce the circulation area. Thus, the open space with the living room and kitchen crosses the entire plan, from one façade to the other. Therefore, all the other divisions like bedrooms and bathrooms have a direct access from the main space.

This space organization induced the principal architecture idea of the project.

In order to diminish the circulation, all the doors to the living room are transformed into ‘secret doors’, hidden within a wooden panel painted a traditional colour, so called ‘eggshell’ colour. The with of the wooden bars is equal to the traditional window and door frames that were to be reconstructed.

On the top floor, the attic was used to create a duplex, with the bedrooms and the terrace on the upper part. Also, in order to reduce the circulation area, the internal staircase is positioned in the centre to provide a direct connection to both bedrooms above.

On the roof, the independent access to the terrace and the room windows are resolved by introducing a special triple dormer window.
