Casa da Moeda Apartment
Can the sun reshape a house?
“Rabo de bacalhau”- “cod’s tail” buildings are a highly characteristic typology of Lisbon’s urban expansion in the second half of the 20th century. Structurally, they are organised through thin reinforced concrete slabs supported by solid masonry partition walls, forming a grid that contributes to the overall stability of the building. Set within such a structure, the apartment was in a reasonably good state of conservation.
These apartments are typically developed in depth and, in this case, the original layout contradicted optimal solar exposure and views. The main façade, facing south, accommodated the bedrooms. At the rear, facing north and overlooking the interior of the block, were the social and service areas — the living room, kitchen, former maid’s room, and its bathroom.
The apartment also featured an entrance hall disproportionately large in relation to the remaining spaces.
The project set these two conditions against each other. On the one hand, the intention to minimise demolition; on the other, the need to enhance the social areas of the house, privileging southern light and views towards the street.
The main demolitions therefore focus on the rooms adjacent to the main façade. Where the bedrooms were previously located, the living room, dining area, and kitchen are now arranged as a continuous and interconnected space, reinforcing a sense of openness and spatial amplitude.
As in any home, storage is also a key concern. The introduction of built-in cabinetry and a pantry allows for the creation of a continuous element that articulates the entrance hall, kitchen, and corridor, becoming a defining feature of the house’s identity.
