Bordeira House

Aljezur, Portugal
2009

How do we build a contemporary house in a traditional outer shell?

A house in the village of Bordeira, in which half the project was already pre-designed. This was owed to the village’s characteristics, which establish unavoidable principles.
The materials and colours of the outer walls, the roof, the proportion of the windows and overall volumetry of the house were hence outlined.
It became imperative to find, in the interior of the house, the answers to our client’s needs, and to the fact that the house was being built in the 21st century. We were concerned with what special features this house would have.

The characteristics of the village determine unavoidable principles. A vacation home in the village of Bordeira, which may one day become an everyday home. In the meantime, it is almost certain that in addition to receiving its owners, it will be rented out and lent to friends.

The lot is small and quite buried. We know it will have to be “squeezed”. Half of the project is already designed.

The materials and color of the exterior walls, the roof, the proportion of the windows and the volume of the house are all lined up. It is essential to find in the interior the answers to our clients’ needs, and to the fact that the house is being built in the 21st century. We are concerned about what this particular house will have. The budget is low, pointing to construction solutions that are suitable for local labor, with popular and low-cost materials.

We decided to concentrate our efforts on a few elements that could be special. This gave rise to the composition of the first floor pavement, all in hydraulic mosaic, and the design of the staircase volume. The patio is treated as an extension of the living room, with a large glass wall dividing them. Downstairs is the social area – living room, kitchen and bathroom, upstairs the bedrooms.
